The AI Music & Sound Prompt Guide.

Style prompts, BPM, [Verse] and [Chorus] tags, vocals, sound effects and lip-sync scripts that land on the beat. With 12 copy-ready templates.

Write it on the beat.
In one paragraph

How to prompt sound.

For music, split the job in two: a style prompt that names a specific sub-genre, mood, BPM, lead instruments, vocal type and production era, and lyrics organized with tags like [Verse], [Chorus] and [Bridge], 2–4 lines each, with stage directions in parentheses. For sound effects, prompt one sound at a time: source, action, surface, space and distance, then layer them. For lip sync, write short spoken sentences with punctuation for pauses and spell tricky names the way they sound.

The music formula

Name the sound. Then the song.

The style prompt sets the sound. The lyrics field sets the song. Keep them apart when you can.

  1. 01GenreA specific sub-genre beats a broad one.“80s synthwave, not “electronic””
  2. 02MoodOne or two feelings, not five.“nostalgic, driving”
  3. 03TempoExact BPM, or a feel like “slow ballad.”“118 BPM”
  4. 04InstrumentsName specific ones. “Felt piano” beats “piano.”“gated snare, analog pads”
  5. 05VocalsVoice type and delivery, or instrumental.“breathy female lead”
  6. 06ProductionEra and mix character.“warm analog tape, wide stereo”
  7. 07StructureSections in the lyrics field, with tags.“[Verse] [Chorus] [Bridge]”
  8. 08LengthHow long, or where it will be used.“30-second ad bed”
Structure tags

Tags tell the model where you are.

Put them in the lyrics, 2–4 lines per section. Anything in (parentheses) is a direction, not a lyric.

  • [Intro]Opening, often instrumental.“(soft pad swell)”
  • [Verse]Story lines. 2–4 lines each.
  • [Pre Chorus]Builds tension into the hook.
  • [Chorus]The hook. Give it its own tag so it lifts.
  • [Bridge]A change of chords or mood before the last chorus.
  • [Drop]The payoff in electronic music.“(heavy bass drop)”
  • [Solo] / [Inst]Instrumental section; [Inst] alone makes an instrumental track.“(guitar solo)”
  • [Outro]The ending.“(pads fade out)”
Tempo

BPM by genre. A cheat sheet.

Always state the BPM for rhythmic genres. It keeps the tempo from drifting.

Sound effects

One sound, six details.

Prompt one sound at a time and layer them later. The more physical the description, the better.

  3. 03 · Surface / materialWhat it hits or rubs.on a stone floor

Put together

Heavy wooden door slams shut on a stone floor in a large empty hall, close-mic and loud, with a long echo fading out.

By job

Songs, beds, effects and voices.

Four kinds of audio, four ways to prompt them.

Songs with vocals

Music

Best for: full songs, jingles and theme tunes with sung lyrics.

  • Keep the style prompt and the lyrics separate when you can, so you can keep the lyrics and try new genres.
  • Tag every section, and give the chorus its own [Chorus] tag so it gets a real lift.
  • Put stage directions in parentheses: (whispered), (guitar solo). Unbracketed text gets sung.
  • Describe the sound instead of naming a real artist.
Example

Style: indie pop, sunny and nostalgic, 112 BPM, jangly clean electric guitars, warm bass, light drums, bright female lead vocal, 2010s summer feel. [Verse] Windows down on the coast road Salt in the air and the radio low [Chorus] We were golden, we were young Singing loud into the sun

Instrumentals and beds

Music

Best for: ad beds, intros, background music for videos and podcasts.

  • Ask for instrumental explicitly, or use [Inst] as the only lyrics.
  • Mention where it plays: “background bed under a voiceover, no busy melody.”
  • Give a length or a section map: [Intro] (8 bars) [Inst] [Outro].
  • For rhythmic genres, always state the BPM to keep the tempo steady.
Example

Style: lo-fi hip-hop, calm and warm, 82 BPM, dusty vinyl crackle, mellow Rhodes chords, soft boom-bap drums, round upright bass, instrumental, background bed for a study vlog. [Inst]

Sound effects

Add Sound VFX

Best for: foley, whooshes, impacts and ambiences for your clips.

  • One sound per prompt. Generate layers separately and combine them.
  • Add detail like a sound designer: “professionally recorded footsteps on gravel, foley.”
  • Match the sound to what’s on screen and when it happens.
  • Say how it ends: a short click, a long echo, a fade.
Example

Close-mic footsteps of leather boots on wet gravel, slow steady pace, quiet night ambience, professionally recorded foley.

Lip sync scripts

Lip Sync

Best for: talking characters, product explainers and dubbed lines.

  • Write the way people talk: short sentences, contractions, one idea per line.
  • Use punctuation for timing: commas for small pauses, periods for stops, an em dash for a beat.
  • Spell brand names as they sound if they get mispronounced: “Creatide” → “cree-uh-tide.”
  • Match length to the clip: roughly 2–3 words per second.
Example

Hey! Quick one. I tried every AI video app this year — and this is the one I kept. Everything’s in one place. Try it tonight.

Rewrites

Same idea. Better prompt.

Three common mistakes, and the fix.

Before

make a cool song about summer

No genre, tempo, instruments or vocal. You’ll get something generic.
After

Style: indie pop, sunny and nostalgic, 112 BPM, jangly clean electric guitars, warm bass, light drums, bright female lead vocal. [Verse] Windows down on the coast road [Chorus] We were golden, we were young

Before

[Chorus] (make this part louder and more emotional) we are the champions of the night we will never stop fighting for the light

Directions and lyrics are mixed, and the section is one long line.
After

[Chorus] (full band, bigger drums) We are the fire in the night We never stop, we hold the light

Before

explosion, glass breaking, people screaming, car alarm, sirens

Five sounds in one prompt. Layer them separately instead.
After

A large glass window shattering onto a concrete street, close and loud, with sharp shards scattering and a short tail.

Writing music & sound prompts07
01

How do I write a good AI music prompt?

Name a specific sub-genre, one or two moods, an exact BPM, lead instruments, the vocal type and the production era. Put lyrics in a separate field with [Verse] and [Chorus] tags.

02

What are music structure tags?

Labels like [Intro], [Verse], [Pre Chorus], [Chorus], [Bridge], [Drop], [Solo], [Inst] and [Outro] that tell the model how to arrange the song. Keep each section to 2–4 lines.

03

How do I make an instrumental?

Say “instrumental, no vocals” in the style prompt, or use [Inst] as the only lyrics. You can map sections with [Intro] [Inst] [Outro] and parenthetical cues.

04

Can I prompt a song in the style of a famous artist?

Describe the sound instead: genre, era, instruments, vocal tone and production. It gives better control and avoids imitating a real artist’s voice.

05

How do I write sound effect prompts?

One sound per prompt: source, action, surface, space, distance and how it ends. Generate layers separately and combine them in your edit.

06

How do I write a script for lip sync?

Short spoken sentences, punctuation for pauses, brand names spelled phonetically if needed, and about 2–3 words per second of video.

07

Can I add sound to an AI video?

Yes. Add Sound VFX on Creatide.ai creates sound effects matched to your video, and some video models, like Veo 3.1, generate audio with the picture.
